American Legion Post 305 - May 2009
SAL
ALR
                             From the Legion Commander:

The Fish Fries were absolutely beyond belief! We broke all records for the number of dinners served.
The best part of this is we made a profit. We could not have done this without the many members who
came out to help. Thank you, thank you, thank you, to all those who made this year’s Fish Fries
successful.

Upcoming events include a Post spring clean-up for May 2nd. This consists of cleaning the inside of the
hall, cleaning the rifles for Memorial Day, and sprucing up the outside. The day starts at 9:30 am, with
a pizza lunch at noon. This is a must, so please if you have the time, come and help.

The Post is also sponsoring a Texas Hold’em, May 7th, 8th, and 9th. We are short two volunteers for
May 9th for the 2:00-6:00 pm shift, and one volunteer for the 6:00-10:00 pm shift. Please call me at 616-
318-6098 if you can fill any of these spots.

The friends of Bill & Bridgette Neil are holding a benefit for Bill & Bridgette on May 30th beginning at
7:00 pm. There will be music provided by several local bands and featuring Bert Jones. This will all be
for donations to help Bill & Bridgette after losing their home to a fire. The evening includes dancing,
50/50 drawings, and good food. Join the fund and help the cause.

Memorial Day is May 25th. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 am. The first cemetery is Alaska at 9:00
am., Blain at 9:45 am., Dutton at 10:30 am., Holy Corners at 11:15 am., and the Caledonia Parade at 12:
00 noon. We are asking all of our younger members (under 60 years old) to stand with us to honor our
fallen comrades.

Our next meeting is Wednesday, May 6, 2009, social and dinner hour at 6:30 pm, and the general
membership meeting at 7:30 pm. Elections of officers for the coming year will be held at this meeting.
We need every member to get involved. Please join us. The next Bar & Operations Committee meeting
is Monday, May 4th, at 6:30 pm, Joint Officers meeting at 7:00 pm, and the Legion Executive
Committee meeting at 7:30 pm.

                                                                From the Auxiliary

Well, I believe spring is finally here!! As you prepare your gardens, don’t forget to save your unwanted
perennials for the annual plant swap on May 15th. If you have extra pots to put them in, it would be
greatly appreciated. Please label them also. And, if you just need new plants, stop by and see what
others have dropped off. This is one of our best fund raisers with all proceeds going to the Homeless
Shelter.

This years 1st place Poppy Poster winners were Lauren Balut for Class 4 and Saundra DeJong for Class
5. Thank you to everyone who participated. There were many excellent posters to choose from. The
posters will be on display in the Post hall. Also Poppy Days are on May 21st through the 23rd. You can
pick up your poppies and donation can at our next meeting on May 13th. This helps raise money for
our Veteran’s Home Projects for the upcoming year.

Once again, the Auxiliary is providing the food for the luncheon on Memorial Day. We are in need of
our members to bring salads and deserts again this year. Please drop them off at the Post. Your help
would be greatly appreciated.

I’ll see you at our next meeting on May 13th. We will be voting on our next year’s officers, so your
participation is very important. Social hour is at 6:00 pm, with the meeting at 7:00 pm

 Make a great day………
Kristen

                                                                   From the SAL

Hello SAL members, hope you are finally enjoying the weather we are having. This will be short and
sweet (kind of). Thanks again to everyone who has helped with all of the events that have been taking
place at the Post. We are doing a Texas Hold’em on May 14th, 15th & 16th at TJ’S Card Room which
is part of Russo’s on Division just north of the M-6 overpass (on west side of Division). Hopefully we
do well with the money.

Saturday, May 2nd, is Road/Post clean up at 9:00 am…Can you give us a hand to shorten everyone’s
time needed that day?

Memorial Day is May 25th. We will need people to participate in the Color Guard. Please let me know
if you are available. Jim-Bob is also looking for a couple more people to help with putting up the
Memorial Flags at the cemetery. Please contact him if you can help the week before.

Elections will be held during the May 11th meeting. There were several names that came up of people
that were not at the last meeting…What position do you want? There needs to be change in the these
officer positions. As it sits right now, we might not have the officers to continue operating our SAL
starting in September.
Will you be part of the reason we fold?

                                                                                                                 Randy Eggers

                                                   From the A.L.R. Director

Elections of officers were held at the April meeting. Randy Eggers was elected as the 2009 ALR Director.

I would like to thank all of the ALR members that stepped up and helped with the events of 2008.

Saturday, May 30th will be the 2009 Spring Fun
Run. More details on this fun event will be posted soon. Many other events in 2009 will be planned.

See you at the meeting May 19th. The meeting starts at 7:00 pm, social hour from 6-7:00 pm.

Each month, more of you sign up to receive the newsletter by e-mail. One of the reasons people wish to
continue receiving the newsletter by mail is the calendar of events. As of this month, your monthly
newsletter will come with a calendar attachment on a pdf file. This will require you to have Adobe
Reader software which is free off the web. Everyone now will be able to print their copy of the calendar.

Our Prayer Page is often out of date due to many factors. Your help would be appreciated if you would
kindly let the Webmaster know of member hardships by e-mailing information to:
